Douglas and coworkers have demonstrated that this stimulation is blocked when the interferon -γ is mixed with Heparin (44,45). There is also evidence Heparin may directly effect the adhesion and diapedesis of leukocytes at sites of inflammation. The selectins are a group of glycoproteins which may be responsible for the initial adhesion of leukocytes to sites of inflammation. Significantly, Heparin has been shown to bind to both the P- and L - selectins which may prevent their presentation on the surface of cells at the site of inflammation (46,47).
