It produces an interest, not in the books themselves, but in yourself. And at the same time the student is reading the texts for his course, he or she is very likely concerned too with a course on writing. Do it yourself - 'creative' writing. And yet of course in most cases it is hardly creative but self-creative, self-absorbing, self-proclaiming. Books as an aid to finding out who you really are. This may have its advantages too, but it certainly does not encourage a true habit of reading. It is at this point that the mocking presence of Gore Vidal makes an appearance, pointing out that we have too many writers or would-be writers today, but all too few readers.
Like most novels it was a fraud, even though one I had enjoyed pulling off. I got married about this time, and perceiving my wife had true talent and more, I enjoyed providing a kind of friendly and critical Other Worlds to Inhabit 31 receptor, which she could use to test her own imagination, and the reality of her writing self.
